Support and guidance from the M\u0101ori community has been the greatest influence and inspiration for his carving. He considers the most satisfying acknowledgement possible is that he is proud to have many pieces &#8216;at home&#8217; on Marae throughout Aotearoa. His attitude to carving bone is inspired by that of traditional artists. They strove for excellence in order to please the spirit world. Their understanding that harmony is the balance of Spiritual and Physical elements has enriched both his life and his carving. An absorbing interest in the art of the West Coast Canadian Indian people led him to research animal forms in M\u0101ori Art. Due to historical events there was a decline in the use and cultural practice of the instrumental traditions within M\u0101ori culture and with the knowledge base connected to it.  There has been a revival of this craft over the last 30-40 years, led by the late Hirini Melbourne, Richard Nunns, Brian Flintoff and Ringinui Keefe, Joe Malcolm, Clem Mellish, Rangiiria Hedley, Aroha Yates Smith, and Hinewirangi Kohu Morgan, Ross and Bruce Gregory, Te Miringa Hohaia and others.  Haumanu has grown from these initiatives.
