Last week Haumanu hosted the first national w\u0101nanga since the official reforming of the ‘collective’ at P\u016brekireki marae in P\u012brongia. By all accounts the w\u0101nanga was a success and stands as a new milestone for Haumanu in pursuit of providing a solid foundation for the revitalising of taonga p\u016boro and the normalisation of these of taonga p\u016boro in today’s context.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Taonga P\u016boro W\u0101nanga content<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This w\u0101nanga event has been a goal for Haumanu for sometime and as a collective we wanted to include as many of the important aspects of taonga p\u016boro as possible including reo, tikanga, taonga p\u016boro used in colonisation context, taonga p\u016boro in the environment, taonga p\u016boro in connection with the ora and higher realms, taonga p\u016boro in rongo\u0101 M\u0101ori, the making of taonga p\u016boro and of course an ever constant would be the playing of taonga p\u016boro.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Our Haumanu Collective members James Webster<\/a><\/span>, Libby Gray<\/a><\/span>, Horomona Horo<\/a><\/span>, Awhina Tamarapa<\/a><\/span> along with the support team facilitated many of the w\u0101nanga proceedings. The Haumanu team were joined by Dr Aroha Yates-Smith<\/a><\/span>, Dr Tom Roa<\/a><\/span>, Charles Royal<\/a><\/span>, Kereti Rautangata<\/a><\/span>, Rikki Solomon<\/a><\/span>, Mahina Kaui<\/a><\/span> and Ngaronoa Renata<\/a><\/span> in presenting various aspects of ‘te ao o Taonga Pu\u014dro’ and provided a massive scope of m\u0101tauranga in relation to taonga p\u016boro and te ao M\u0101ori M\u0101ori.<\/p>

\u00a0In addition to these amazing practitioners the wider wh\u0101nau in attendance of the w\u0101nanga also brought a huge amount of m\u0101tauranga to provide an overall amazing experience throughout the week.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Each day started with Karakia Oro, often followed by sessions of playing taonga p\u016boro together and then parakuihi. Everysingle day of the w\u0101nanga was packed full with events including guest speakers, presentations, impromptu performances, w\u0101nanga specifically on important aspects of taonga puoro and the making of taonga p\u016boro.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Day two of the w\u0101nanga involved a h\u012bkoi on Mount P\u012brongia where we listened to the sounds of the ng\u0101here (forest) and mimicked the sounds around us. During this time we were visited by various groups of manu (birds) curious to the sounds that they were hearing. We created performances whilst in the ng\u0101here and at the close of that made our way along the Mangakara track to the award (river) where we bathed, played and bonded together in the ng\u0101here playing with the ng\u0101here.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Everybody came away from the w\u0101nanga with new taonga p\u016boro that they had made. Even the practitioners enjoyed time hands-on enjoying areas of making, playing or k\u014drero on aspects of taonga p\u016boro which may not have necessarily been their area of expertise. In this, the whole level of m\u0101tauranga was raised throughout all levels of capability throughout the week.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As performers and practitioners we spent the final evening playing music together, performing stories and sharing the sounds of taonga p\u016boro. This was an amazing evening of performance and play where everyone got involved in some way to share ora reo together .\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This w\u0101nanga has served as an incredible basis for future w\u0101nanga with w\u0101nanga planned for later this year in T\u0101maki M\u0101kaurau and Te Waipounamu. This will follow a similar format and we will be calling upon more speakers and pooling together similar activities to this one. There has been a revival of this craft over the last 30-40 years, led by the late Hirini Melbourne, Richard Nunns, Brian Flintoff and Ringinui Keefe, Joe Malcolm, Clem Mellish, Rangiiria Hedley, Aroha Yates Smith, and Hinewirangi Kohu Morgan, Ross and Bruce Gregory, Te Miringa Hohaia and others. Haumanu has grown from these initiatives.
