Over the past 30 – 40 years, the revival of taonga p\u016boro has focused on nurturing and growing the uniqueness of taonga p\u016boro reo, tikanga and m\u0101tauranga as handed down to us by our atua and t\u016bpuna. Haumanu Collective has continued the legacy of our revival leaders and stayed true to our name that was gifted by them. \u2018Haumanu\u2019 means both \u2018breath of birds\u2019 and \u2018revival\u2019. Over the past three years Haumanu Collective

Haumanu had its beginnings at an informal weekend near the top of Pikikiruna on Takaka Hill, near Nelson. When Hirini and Brian Flintoff travelled there initially to dedicate a P\u016bt\u014drino carved from a 35,000-year-old t\u014dtara tree it was early in the day and mist wafted from the mysterious holes scattered throughout the vast expanses of warming marble. He began playing softly, slowly building momentum, and as he played the sound filled the still air above them.<\/p>

Soon the echoes were circling over us and in that magic moment it was as if they were inside a crystal glass singing to the finger\u2019s touch. They called that great marble rock nestled in bush \u014chaka Tapu, the Sacred Nest. Several members of the group have returned at other times to film and record at this special place and at the same time we have revived our energies in its special aura.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The name Haumanu can be literally translated as \u2018breath of birds\u2019 and was chosen because of the importance of bird songs in the traditions of the music. The word also means revival and this is the aim of the group. The Haumanu logo depicts our greatest songbird, the K\u014dkako, being attracted by the sound of a flute.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Reviving taonga p\u016boro<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMany demonstrations and workshops have been conducted over the years, mostly on marae throughout the country. A collection of instruments constructed at one of the workshops or hui of instrument makers held at Ot\u0101tara in 1995 was lodged at Te Papa for future students to have access to. Ng\u0101wara Gordon at the Hei Tiki Gallery in Rotorua has continued the momentum of these hui for makers and players. \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Over the past years since then, Haumanu has inspired a generation of people to further deepen their knowledge in the art of taonga p\u016boro. This includes the whakapapa, cosmological connections, the tikanga surrounding them, the processes of making them and the m\u0101tauranga associated in many aspects of te ao M\u0101ori.
