In June 2024, two dedicated practitioners of taonga p\u016boro, Tamihana Katene and James Webster, represented Aotearoa at the prestigious International Indigenous Music Summit<\/a><\/span> held in Toronto. As ambassadors of M\u0101ori culture, they carried with them the sounds, stories, and spirit of taonga p\u016boro, sharing these with Indigenous artists and audiences from around the world. As kaitiaki (guardians) and kaikawe (conveyors) of M\u0101ori musical heritage, they showcased the richness of taonga p\u016boro, from the haunting notes of the p\u016bt\u014drino to the soulful breath of the k\u014dauau. There has been a revival of this craft over the last 30-40 years, led by the late Hirini Melbourne, Richard Nunns, Brian Flintoff and Ringinui Keefe, Joe Malcolm, Clem Mellish, Rangiiria Hedley, Aroha Yates Smith, and Hinewirangi Kohu Morgan, Ross and Bruce Gregory, Te Miringa Hohaia and others. Haumanu has grown from these initiatives.
