It\u2019s been an immense privilege to walk beside this Collective.\u201d\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-q-footer\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"elementor-blockquote__author\">Margy Aull<\/cite>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3c2e495 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3c2e495\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Work Behind the Scenes with Haumanu<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8cd5d3c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8cd5d3c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 2020, a knock came at the door. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margaret_Aull\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Margaret Aull (Margy)<\/a><\/span> had just returned from a Toi ki Waikato w\u0101nanga when <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haumanucollective.com\/mao\/james-webster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James Webster<\/a><\/span> called in. That moment marked the beginning of a remarkable journey with Haumanu Collective.<\/p><p>With a background in arts management and kaupapa M\u0101ori, Margy had previously worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twoa.ac.nz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa<\/a>, New Zealand M\u0101ori Arts and Crafts, and Toi M\u0101ori Aotearoa. She admits she didn\u2019t know much about taonga p\u016boro at the time\u2014beyond the legacy of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hirini_Melbourne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hirini Melbourne<\/a><\/span> and her wife\u2019s connections with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.richardnunns.net.nz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Nunns<\/a><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haumanucollective.com\/mao\/horomona-horo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Horomona Horo<\/a><\/span> through their group Ng\u0101 Tae.<\/p><p>Widely known in M\u0101ori visual arts circles for her leadership and creative advocacy, she reflects, <em>\u201cI\u2019d watch Horo and James perform at kaupapa and think it was cool\u2014but never understood how important it was for us as a people.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b1d6d17 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b1d6d17\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The opportunity to contribute became clear:<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5f7caab elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5f7caab\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>\u201cFor those who know me, I\u2019m kaupapa-driven. I had just finished project managing the 9th International Indigenous Arts gathering at T\u016brangawaewae and was already super busy. It wasn\u2019t until Waimihi reminded me of the opportunity to use my skills for taonga p\u016boro, and that James came to see me kanohi kitea\u2014it said a lot. I knew then I had to at least consider it.\u201d <\/em><\/p><p>From the outset, Margy hit the ground running\u2014building relationships, infrastructure, legal frameworks, financial systems, and the Collective\u2019s huapapa and brand.<br \/><em>\u201cEffectively, my first task was to do in three weeks what is normally done in four months\u2014we had deliverables to hit.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>This momentum shaped her approach: grounded, generous, and fiercely effective.<br \/><em>\u201cBeing a conduit between funding bodies and the kaupapa you always have to know the \u2018why\u2019 when doing this kind of work\u2014it helps keep the many parts moving forward.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ab5901 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5ab5901\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Navigating New Territory<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1c69abf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1c69abf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Her first hui was on Valentine\u2019s Day in Kirikiriroa, with <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haumanucollective.com\/mao\/te-kahureremoa-taumata\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Te Kahureremoa<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haumanucollective.com\/mao\/elizabeth-gray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Libby Gray<\/a><\/span>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haumanucollective.com\/mao\/tamihana-katene\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">T\u0101mihana Katene<\/a><\/span>, Horomona Horo, Warren Warbrick, and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haumanucollective.com\/mao\/hinewirangi-kohu-morgan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hinew\u012brangi Kohu-Morgan<\/a><\/span>.<br \/><em>\u201cI was nervous\u2014I knew full well how passionate artists and practitioners can be. But it was clear this was a very special project with some very special people.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Margy quickly grasped how deeply colonisation had impacted taonga p\u016boro.<br \/><em>\u201cI realised how much I didn\u2019t know. When I saw it was deemed an &#8216;at-risk reo&#8217; by a Ministry report, I knew I needed to support James and the Collective to turn that around.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c5ed223 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c5ed223\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Responding to Challenge with Innovation<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4253920 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4253920\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>COVID-19 disrupted Haumanu\u2019s w\u0101nanga-based, marae-rooted kaupapa.<br \/><em>\u201cThe only way to reach our people was through innovation,\u201d<\/em> Margy said. This sparked the creation of <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haumanucollective.com\/mao\/oro-rua-taonga-puoro-podcast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oro Rua<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, a podcast series offering a digital platform specifically for taonga p\u016boro\u2014a gap she identified and helped fill.<\/p><p>She also maintained energy and relationships through unpredictable times.<br \/><em>\u201cMahia te mahi hei painga m\u014d te iwi\u2014keep working for the greater good of the kaupapa for our people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-33ea361 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"33ea361\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Moments of Meaning and Loss<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-64bca55 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"64bca55\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The 2020 launch in Waikato stands out. Haumanu ran a full day of activities at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.waikato.ac.nz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Waikato University<\/a><\/span>.<br \/><em>\u201cI remember the overwhelming interest\u2014we had registrations from Christchurch to Te Kao. Our people were hungry for this taonga.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Despite her mother suffering a stroke, Margy continued her mahi.<br \/><em>\u201cIt was a fragile time. When I heard the oro from Horo and the team that morning, it helped me release that stress and focus forward. I saw the magic they brought\u2014it was beautiful.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Haumanu was also marked by loss. When matriarch and kuia Hinew\u012brangi passed, it left a deep gap.<br \/><em>\u201cThe tribute at Te Papa was powerful\u2014Horo and the team launched the album that night and Season 2 of Oro Rua, with her interview as the first episode. It was Matariki. It felt right that we could honour her in that way.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e4ad633 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e4ad633\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A Legacy Rooted in Collective Growth<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bd4c4d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bd4c4d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Margy is most proud of the Collective\u2019s resources\u2014w\u0101nanga, podcasts, publications, and the album.<br \/><em>\u201cIt\u2019s not just the outputs\u2014it\u2019s about regenerating the momentum of H\u012brini, Richard, Rangiiria and others.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>She acknowledges the challenge and reward of leading a collective:<br \/><em>\u201cTrying to bring artists together can be like herding cats\u2014I know, because I am one too! But when we come together, that\u2019s when the magic happens.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Margy celebrates the uniqueness of Haumanu as a group of kaupapa-driven leaders\u2014each already accomplished in their own right\u2014coming together for the love of taonga p\u016boro.<br \/><em>\u201cThey\u2019ve worked hard to get Haumanu going and have a deep love and responsibility to the wellbeing of Taonga Puoro.\u201d<\/em><\/p><p>Thanks to strong digital engagement and high demand, Haumanu w\u0101nanga often hit capacity within 24 hours.<br \/><em>\u201cIt\u2019s important to let Haumanu do what they do best, and then wrap the support around them to make it happen. People like Brendon Moses and Aunty Judy Ripia have been key to that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-de0ad67 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"de0ad67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Making Way for What\u2019s Next<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0324a1e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0324a1e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>After five years, Margy sees this not as an ending but as an evolution.<br \/><em>\u201cThe Project Manager role isn\u2019t the right fit anymore\u2014Haumanu is now an Incorporated Society with a new strategy, growing from 7 to 11 members. All of this on top of their already full lives. We have developed a strong huapapa with so much more potential to grow. They should be very proud of what they have achieved so far\u2014it\u2019s been an incredible journey&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9ec8a08 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9ec8a08\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>She hopes Haumanu will see taonga p\u016boro recognised at Te Matatini and that Hinew\u012brangi\u2019s vision of a kura becomes a reality.<br \/><em>\u201cWhatever comes next will be more than what we had before. That\u2019s what makes this role so exciting.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-761ad3a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"761ad3a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">He Mihi Whakamutunga<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dee0fc4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dee0fc4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Margy continues her journey as a multitalented change agent\u2014an accomplished painter, curator, and leader\u2014deeply grounded in her culture, creative practice, and the strength of her wh\u0101nau. Through kaupapa like The Veiqia Project she is helping to revive the sacred tradition of t\u0101 moko for Fijian women, alongside the many commitments to the arts.\u00a0<strong style=\"font-family: var(--bodyfontfamily),var(--nv-fallback-ff); font-size: var(--bodyfontsize); letter-spacing: var(--bodyletterspacing); text-transform: var(--bodytexttransform);\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a style=\"--linkdeco: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/theveiqiaproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Veiqia Project<\/a><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: var(--bodyfontfamily),var(--nv-fallback-ff); font-size: var(--bodyfontsize); letter-spacing: var(--bodyletterspacing); text-transform: var(--bodytexttransform);\">\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: var(--bodyfontfamily),var(--nv-fallback-ff); font-size: var(--bodyfontsize); letter-spacing: var(--bodyletterspacing); text-transform: var(--bodytexttransform);\">is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: var(--bodyfontfamily),var(--nv-fallback-ff); font-size: var(--bodyfontsize); letter-spacing: var(--bodyletterspacing); text-transform: var(--bodytexttransform);\">a creative research project inspired by the practice of Fijian female tattooing.<\/span><\/p><p>When asked how she balances it all, she laughs: <em>\u201cIt\u2019s about the bigger picture stuff &#8211; activating, whakapapa, connecting, creating, our people &#8211; doing what I believe in and what I\u2019m passionate about.\u201d<br \/><\/em><\/p><p>She is currently developing the new taonga p\u016boro programme for Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa, set to launch next Matariki<em> \u201cI&#8217;ll still be doing my bit for our taonga tuku iho &#8211; just in another way.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>She doesn&#8217;t have any regrets and is grateful to Haumanu <em>\u201cI love Haumanu I have deep respect and aroha for them. It\u2019s helped my practice, my wh\u0101nau\u2014they\u2019ve taught me so much. It\u2019s been transformative, serving this kaupapa.
