This powerful kaupapa brought together 26 passionate participants from across Aotearoa to explore how we can protect, preserve and uplift the sacred sounds of taonga p\u016boro in the ever-changing digital world.\u00a0<\/p><p>Held over Zoom, this five-hour immersive experience featured a stellar line-up of guest speakers, collaborative k\u014drero, and reflections grounded in tikanga M\u0101ori and m\u0101tauranga. Together, we explored the intersection of traditional sound, intellectual property, and cultural guardianship.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d2bbc9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"3d2bbc9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Highlights from the Day:<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f2c5f2e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f2c5f2e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hinewehi_Mohi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hinewehi Mohi<\/a><\/span> (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apraamcos.co.nz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">APRA AMCOS)<\/a><\/span> shared deep whakaaro on the importance of protecting our compositions and registering our mahi \u2014 especially when taonga p\u016boro takes centre stage. She reminded us: \u201cGive your work a name, and register it. It\u2019s part of how we protect our legacy.\u201d<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hannahdarroch.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dr Hannah Darroch<\/span><\/a> (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sounz.org.nz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SOUNZ<\/a><\/span>) introduced the many ways SOUNZ supports M\u0101ori artists \u2014 from their national music archive and educational tools to their Visual Stories and H\u014dtaka M\u0101ori platforms \u2014 all designed to amplify our voices and stories.<\/li><li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sounz.org.nz\/contributors\/146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reti Hedley<\/a><\/span>, our feature artist, gave a powerful and personal insight into his journey as a taonga p\u016boro practitioner and musician. He walked us through his creative process, his use of digital tools, and how tikanga shapes his decision-making as a modern artist working with ancient knowledge.<\/li><li>Our breakout session on Intellectual Property Rights gave participants space to unpack real-world challenges around ownership, cultural consent, and creative freedom. The k\u014drero was rich, honest and kaupapa-driven.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ea83d1c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ea83d1c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What We Heard From Participants<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f67c4d0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f67c4d0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong><em>\u201cThis k\u014drero helped me realise how whakapapa can guide our understanding of IP.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong><em>\u201cIt was refreshing to hear from people who walk the line between tradition and technology.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong><em>\u201cI\u2019ve registered my work before, but never thought about how that sits alongside tikanga \u2014 now I will.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-87cdab2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"87cdab2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What\u2019s Next?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-17dd93d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"17dd93d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This w\u0101nanga is just the beginning. Haumanu has grown from these initiatives. There has been a revival of this craft over the last 30-40 years, led by the late Hirini Melbourne, Richard Nunns, Brian Flintoff and Ringinui Keefe, Joe Malcolm, Clem Mellish, Rangiiria Hedley, Aroha Yates Smith, and Hinewirangi Kohu Morgan, Ross and Bruce Gregory, Te Miringa Hohaia and others.  Haumanu has grown from these initiatives.
