With these words, artist and carver Jo\u2019el Komene<\/a> grounds us in the heart of Te Takap\u016b o Tapuika – the belly of Tapuika, honouring the land, the people, and the whakapapa that shape identity and purpose.<\/p>

Jo\u2019el Komene (Ng\u0101 Puhi, Tapuika, Waitaha, Tainui) is not only a master carver and instrument maker – he is a storyteller of the land, using whakairo and taonga p\u016boro to reconnect our people to whenua and history, while projecting our culture into the future. For over two decades, Jo\u2019el has carried the chisel with intention, turning wood, bone and stone into markers of legacy. From the intricate to the monumental, his works speak to the pulse of our people.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

His formal training in whakairo was shaped through study at Te W\u0101nanga o Aotearoa<\/a>, a place that nurtured his creative pathway and helped refine his craft. From there, Jo\u2019el\u2019s practice expanded into taonga p\u016boro, weaponry, and now large-scale public works.<\/p>

One of his latest contributions is featured on the Rangiruru Business Park Bridge, part of the Tauranga Eastern Link. Here, Jo\u2019el was part of a significant iwi collaboration. At the heart of this installation is the P\u016bhoro design, a powerful Te Arawa waituhituhi pattern symbolising speed and agility<\/strong> – concepts that connect traditional waka navigation to the flow of modern vehicles.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There has been a revival of this craft over the last 30-40 years, led by the late Hirini Melbourne, Richard Nunns, Brian Flintoff and Ringinui Keefe, Joe Malcolm, Clem Mellish, Rangiiria Hedley, Aroha Yates Smith, and Hinewirangi Kohu Morgan, Ross and Bruce Gregory, Te Miringa Hohaia and others. Haumanu has grown from these initiatives.
