Torrential rain, slips in Welcome Bay and Mount Maunganui, and high winds brought uncertainty to our travel plans. But while the mainland trembled, M\u014dt\u012bt\u012b Island stood firm. The skies cleared just in time, revealing tohu that our haerenga would go ahead as intended.<\/p><p>For many of us travelling from Waikato and other rohe, heavy anniversary weekend traffic added delays &#8211; but spirits remained high. Along the journey, we witnessed the aftermath of the storm: fallen trees, debris-laden roads, and signs of whenua recently disturbed. As we drove, the noise of everyday life began to fade. Our wairua realigned, entering the space of w\u0101nanga.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d847ff7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d847ff7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Flight to M\u014dt\u012bt\u012b: Te Rere o te Mauri<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-37f64be elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"37f64be\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Travelling with Island Air Charters, our group flew in small aircraft &#8211; a four-seater and six-seater alternating flights across the moana. The view from above revealed the scarred slopes of Mauao, bearing the fresh wounds of landslides, and then opened to the stunning coastline of M\u014dt\u012bt\u012b.<\/p><p>Upon landing, we were struck by the island\u2019s quiet sovereignty: vehicles not needed to be registered by mainland standard, a lifestyle unbound by the rules of the mainland. We packed into trailers and made our way to<i> Tamatea ki te Huatahi<\/i>, one of the marae alongside<em> Te hinga o te r\u0101<\/em> that would host our w\u0101nanga.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-41b7546 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"41b7546\" pure<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-870218f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"870218f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWe assembled behind the whare and entered the marae under the korowai of p\u014dwhiri. Jo\u2019el Komene and James Webster spoke for the manuhiri, and we were welcomed warmly by the hau k\u0101inga. The moon phase, Tamatea \u0100io, signalled change &#8211; and guided our next steps.\n\nAfter settling in and sharing kai to whakanoa, we embarked on a pure &#8211; a water cleansing ceremony &#8211; walking to the ocean\u2019s edge at<i> Te Onikirikiri<\/i>. The sea was warm, tamariki played, and the energy was high. Some stayed close due to jellyfish, but all embraced the intention of clearing the wairua and opening the space. split into two groups, and began our exploration of the coastal edges of M\u014dt\u012bt\u012b. We journeyed past avocado orchards, out toward <em>Motu Kahakaha<\/em> Island, <em>Motu Nau<\/em> Island, and <em>Motu Puta<\/em> &#8211; each island holding its own k\u014drero and mauri. Along the way, we heard stories of tuatara, endangered skinks, and sacred spaces rarely visited.<\/p><p>At key sites, we paused to play taonga p\u016boro. These moments were intentional &#8211; a sonic offering to the whenua. For both whare tipuna on M\u014dt\u012bt\u012b, this was the first time in living memory that taonga p\u016boro had sounded. Each note carried orooro across the land, reconnecting voices to place.<\/p><p>We concluded at <em>Wairere Bay<\/em>, \u00a0with views of <em>Toka Tai Rock<\/em>, <em>Haui Rock, Toka Tapu Rock<\/em>, <em>Matarehua Island<\/em> and the main land <em>Te Ika a M\u0101ui<\/em> in the far distance where golden sands and seaweed offered a peaceful reunion with the tamariki group. He is represented by the carved head. He lived at a p\u0101 called Otungahoro. At that p\u0101 was a matai pourewa (watchman&#8217;s lookout ) called Mohanakenake where the t\u016btei (sentry) would sound the p\u016bt\u0101t\u0101ra facing the mainland. This is the name given to this P\u016bt\u0101tara.<\/p><p>The paewai (mouthpiece) is made from mata\u012b to embody this k\u014drero. The wing adornment is from a T\u012bt\u012b bird from the island.<\/p><p>This treasure is a koha to both of the Marae and Whare t\u016bpuna on M\u014dt\u012bt\u012b island Ko Te \u00a0Hinga o te r\u0101 r\u0101ua ko Tamatea ki te Huatahi, to enable the hauk\u0101inga and wh\u0101nau to practice this tikanga from now and into the future when welcoming all those who stand at the k\u0113ti. There has been a revival of this craft over the last 30-40 years, led by the late Hirini Melbourne, Richard Nunns, Brian Flintoff and Ringinui Keefe, Joe Malcolm, Clem Mellish, Rangiiria Hedley, Aroha Yates Smith, and Hinewirangi Kohu Morgan, Ross and Bruce Gregory, Te Miringa Hohaia and others.  Haumanu has grown from these initiatives.
