His deep listening &#8211; to birds, winds, and silence &#8211; became the foundation of his musical voice. A fluent native speaker raised in the R\u016b\u0101toki valley, Melbourne dedicated his life to promoting te\u202freo M\u0101ori and to rediscovering the sound worlds of ng\u0101 taonga p\u016boro (traditional M\u0101ori instruments). He descended from the Ng\u0101i\u202fT\u016bhoe and Ng\u0101ti\u202fKahungunu iwi and was raised in a community where the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audioculture.co.nz\/articles\/hirini-melbourne-composer-performer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u0101ori language was universally spoken<\/a><\/span>. His parents, farmer Harry\u202fMelbourne and Nawarihi\u202fMelbourne (n\u00e9e\u202fPuna), named him Sydney at birth, a name he later translated into its M\u0101ori form, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audioculture.co.nz\/articles\/hirini-melbourne-composer-performer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hirini<\/a><\/span>. From a young age he loved birds and insects and spent hours <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audioculture.co.nz\/articles\/hirini-melbourne-composer-performer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">observing them<\/a><\/span>. He attended R\u016b\u0101toki primary school before studying at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audioculture.co.nz\/articles\/hirini-melbourne-composer-performer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Te\u202fAute College and the University of Auckland<\/a><\/span>. Elders such as John\u202fRangihau, T\u012bmoti\u202fK\u0101retu and Te\u202fWharehuia\u202fMilroy encouraged him to master the written and spoken language, and he undertook formal M\u0101ori language study at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audioculture.co.nz\/articles\/hirini-melbourne-composer-performer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">university<\/a>. After graduating, Melbourne taught briefly but found the school environment constraining. He joined the Department of Education\u2019s School Publications Branch and became an editor of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/folksong.org.nz\/pureora\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u0101ori language resources<\/a><\/span>. The organisation\u2019s campaign for language rights profoundly shaped his <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rattle.co.nz\/artists\/hirini-melbourne\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">music and writing<\/a><\/span>. Melbourne composed protest and social\u2010commentary songs such as <strong>\u201cPureora\u201d<\/strong> (an environmental protest song about native forest logging) and <strong>\u201cHinep\u016bk\u014dhurangi\u201d<\/strong> (1982), a cassette album that addressed issues like the proposed Aramoana aluminium smelter and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audioculture.co.nz\/articles\/hirini-melbourne-composer-performer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u0101ori unemployment<\/a>. With producer <strong>David\u202fSomerset<\/strong> he recorded <strong>\u201cTe\u202fAitanga\u202fa\u202fT\u0101ne: Trees, Birds &amp; Insects\u201d<\/strong> (1984) and later returned to R\u016b\u0101toki to record the choir at his old primary school for \u201cR\u016b\u0101toki Children Sing Songs by Syd\u202fMelbourne\u201d (<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audioculture.co.nz\/articles\/hirini-melbourne-composer-performer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1985<\/a><\/span>). The social\u2010issue cassette <strong>\u201cHinep\u016bk\u014dhurangi\u201d<\/strong> (1982) featured singer <strong>Te\u202fRita\u202fPapesch<\/strong> and underlined his support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audioculture.co.nz\/articles\/hirini-melbourne-composer-performer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u0101ori rights<\/a>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-12371cc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"12371cc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Collaboration with Richard Nunns &amp; revival of taonga p\u016boro<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e21feea elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e21feea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In the late 1980s Melbourne became fascinated by traditional instruments he had seen lying <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.audioculture.co.nz\/articles\/hirini-melbourne-composer-performer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unused in museum cases.<\/a><\/span> A workshop on instrument making led to his meeting with musician and ethnomusicologist <strong>Richard\u202fNunns<\/strong>. Together with instrument\u2010makers such as <strong>Brian\u202fFlintoff<\/strong>, they began researching, constructing and playing instruments like the <strong>k\u014dauau<\/strong> (cross\u2010blown flute), <strong>p\u016btorino<\/strong> (bugle flute), <strong>p\u016brerehua<\/strong> (bull\u2011roarer) and <strong>nguru<\/strong> (nose flute). From <strong>1989<\/strong> the pair performed on marae, in schools and at festivals across Aotearoa, drawing audiences into the sonic world of ng\u0101 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musichall.co.nz\/portfolio\/hirini-melbourne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">taonga p\u016boro<\/a><\/span>. Their 1991 album <strong>\u201cToiapiapi\u201d<\/strong> and the seminal 1994 album <strong>\u201cTe\u202fKu\u202fTe\u202fWh\u0113\u201d<\/strong> blended original and traditional compositions; the latter was recorded in a day and a half and sold around <strong>12\u202f000 copies<\/strong>, becoming a benchmark for the revival of taonga p\u016boro. The partnership continued with <strong>\u201cTe\u202fHekenga\u2011\u0101\u2011rangi\u201d<\/strong> (2003) featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haumanucollective.com\/mao\/dr-aroha-yates-smith\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Aroha\u202fYates\u2011Smith<\/strong><\/a>, recorded weeks before Melbourne\u2019s death. A remixed version of Te\u202fKu\u202fTe\u202fWh\u0113, <strong>\u201cTe\u202fWhaiao\u201d<\/strong> (2006), layered digital textures with live performances and introduced the instruments to new audiences.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71f870f elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"71f870f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Music for film &amp; screen<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4cb6307 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4cb6307\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Melbourne wrote and performed music for a number of landmark films. He composed the soundtrack for <strong>Merata\u202fMita\u2019s<\/strong> feature <strong>\u201cMauri\u201d<\/strong> (1988) and served as a M\u0101ori music consultant for <strong>\u201cOnce\u202fWere\u202fWarriors\u201d<\/strong> (1994). His scholarly writings form a core part of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.musichall.co.nz\/portfolio\/hirini-melbourne\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u0101ori\u2011language collections<\/a><\/span>. Beyond academia he served on the boards of the <strong>New Zealand Film Commission<\/strong> and the <strong>New Zealand Music Commission<\/strong>, and was an assessor for <strong>Te\u202fWaka\u202fToi<\/strong> and the Creative New Zealand Arts Board.
