On the 1st and 2nd of May 2026, practitioners, learners, wh\u0101nau and lovers of taonga p\u016boro gathered in Ru\u0101toki for Wai-Oro-Ariki<\/a> – W\u0101nanga Taonga P\u016boro at Te Rewarewa Marae<\/strong>. Led by Wai-Oro-Ariki founder Jo’el Komene-R\u014dreka and supported by Haumanu Collective, the two-day w\u0101nanga was grounded in T\u016bhoetanga, whakapapa, whenua and the living presence of oro M\u0101ori. It invited participants to listen deeply – not only to taonga p\u016boro, but to the marae, the stories, and the legacy carried in that place.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

From the moment manuhiri arrived, Te Rewarewa Marae made its presence felt. The stillness of the valley, the strength of the marae, and the two whare nui standing side by side – Kura mihi rangi<\/strong> and Te Ranimoaho<\/strong>\u00a0– created a powerful setting for learning.<\/p>

The w\u0101nanga opened with p\u014dwhiri, kai and whakawhanaungatanga before moving into an evening of orientation and oro. Through the Rongo Au Oro sound bath experience, taonga p\u016boro were shared as carriers of mauri, memory and relationship.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Honouring Hirini Melbourne<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Te Rewarewa Marae is also the marae of the late Dr Hirini Melbourne ONZM<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, one of the great pou of the taonga p\u016boro revitalisation movement.<\/p>

To sit within the whare, surrounded by memories of Hirini, was humbling. His presence was felt throughout the kaupapa \u2014 in the k\u014drero, waiata, instruments, and the responsibility carried by those continuing the journey of taonga p\u016boro today.<\/p>

A deeply moving moment was the h\u012bkoi to the urup\u0101 where Hirini rests with his wh\u0101nau. Guided respectfully into that space, participants acknowledged him through taonga p\u016boro. For many who had never met Hirini, it felt like meeting him through whenua, sound and legacy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Sound, Tikanga and Place<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

By dawn on Saturday, mist lay low across the whenua as the first sounds of taonga p\u016boro drifted across the p\u0101. Some of the r\u014dp\u016b had risen early to play, while others woke slowly to the sound. It was not performance. It was immersion.<\/p>

Throughout the day, learning unfolded through k\u014drero, observation, shared meals, silence and reflection. Members of Hirini Melbourne\u2019s wh\u0101nau shared stories of his upbringing, his connection to the rohe, and the histories that continue to shape Te Rewarewa and Ru\u0101toki.
Justin Kereama shared whakaaro about taonga p\u016boro, atua, tapu, space and intention. His k\u014drero reminded the r\u014dp\u016b that sound has context, and that tikanga guides not only how taonga p\u016boro are played, but where, when and why.<\/p>

The presence of Whirimako Black added another layer of richness. Through k\u014drero and m\u014dteatea, she reminded participants that taonga p\u016boro sit within a wider continuum of voice, story, language and lived experience.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Remembering the Revitalisation Journey<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe w\u0101nanga also looked back to earlier pathways of revitalisation. Participants viewed rare archival footage from the 1970s, including early taonga p\u016boro gatherings connected to Joseph Te Poroa Malcom, and footage of a young Hirini Melbourne. This opened space to acknowledge those who helped prepare the ground before taonga p\u016boro became more visible across M\u0101ori arts, music and education. It was a reminder that revitalisation is carried by many hands, voices and acts of quiet commitment.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

As the w\u0101nanga drew to a close, participants reflected on the journey of taonga p\u016boro from revival toward thriving presence.<\/p>

Taonga blanks were gifted to support ongoing making and practice, while journals and creative resources encouraged participants to continue writing, composing, reflecting and listening after returning home.<\/p>

A special moment of tuku taonga was also shared, with a p\u016bt\u014drino made by Jared Hemopo gifted to Te Rewarewa Marae. The taonga was offered in acknowledgement of the mana of the marae, the legacy of Hirini Melbourne, and the ongoing relationship between taonga p\u016boro practitioners and the places that continue to hold this kaupapa.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
