The p\u016bk\u0101ea was a wooden trumpet, up to 2.5 metres long making it one of the largest taonga puoro. It was made by splitting a length of mata\u012b<\/a>, hollowing out each half, then binding them together, often with the aerial roots of the kiekie vine. The narrow end had a carved wooden mouthpiece and the other was flared out. Sometimes the flared end had wooden pegs added to make it resemble the human throat.<\/p>

P\u016bk\u0101ea can be used in many contexts. In whatever context they are played, the primary function is to announce spiritual pathways. Ancestral M\u0101ori used p\u016bk\u0101ea to sound alarms during times of conflict and to announce relay signals to warriors. In this context they were dedicated to T\u016bmatauenga, the atua (spiritual entity) of war. For this reason p\u016bk\u0101ea are sometimes called war trumpets, although this is a limited perspective of the instrument and not entirely correct.<\/p>

Despite this association with conflict, p\u016bk\u0101ea were also used during peaceful ceremony as signalling instruments for various occasions of importance. This included important cultural formalities and also agricultural rituals associated with the planting and harvesting of k\u016bmara and other crops. When used in the agricultural context, p\u016bk\u0101ea were dedicated to Rongo m\u0101 T\u0101ne, the atua (spiritual entity) of the k\u016bmara and cultivated food.\u00a0The P\u016bt\u0101tara<\/a> is similar in that it is ‘trumpet-like’.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tP\u016bk\u0101ea are most commonly played with the embouchure technique similar to that of western brass and trumpet instruments. This produces a loud dramatic trumpet-like sound known as k\u014dkiri that can be heard over long distances. Longer p\u016bk\u0101ea produce a deeper sound with shorter instruments producing a higher pitch. Skilled players can produce several notes and tones from a single instrument. Passive voice techniques and flute playing techniques can also be used through the p\u016bk\u0101ea producing a multi-harmonic and captivating tones that range from subtle and gentle to powerful and aggressive.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
