A new step forward for taonga pūoro has been made with the launch of Te Tohu Taonga Pūoro (Level 4), now available through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa.
For many within the kaupapa, this has been a long time coming.
Taonga pūoro has always been taught and shared through wānanga, through relationships, and through lived practice. That hasn’t changed. What this programme offers is a way for that knowledge to sit within a formal learning environment – while still grounded in te reo, tikanga, and mātauranga Māori.
Learning grounded in kaupapa Māori
This programme creates a clear pathway for those wanting to deepen their understanding and practice of taonga pūoro.
It supports:
- learners who are beginning their journey
- practitioners wanting to build on existing knowledge
- those looking to reconnect with whakapapa through sound
Importantly, it does this within a kaupapa Māori framework, held by an institution that has long supported accessible, community-based education.
Te Tohu Taonga Pūoro improves accessibility
Having Te Tohu Taonga Pūoro delivered through Te Wānanga o Aotearoa means more of our people can access this learning in a supported and structured way.
It removes some of the barriers that have existed in the past – where access depended on proximity, networks, or opportunity – and opens the door wider for whānau, hapū, and iwi.
For Haumanu Collective, this reflects the direction we have been working towards.
A future where taonga pūoro is:
- visible across different spaces
- supported through education pathways
- carried by the next generation with confidence
Kia mau, kia whakatipu, kia tuku iho ai ngā taonga pūoro Māori.
